Why does Buick support Eat Out For Good?
As the presenting sponsor for the second consecutive year, Buick recognizes what Austin can achieve with the ongoing Eat Out for Good movement. The community’s restaurant scene provides the perfect setting for Austinites to experience new tastes while also supporting Urban Roots’ sustainable solutions to empower youth and cultivate community.
Buick vehicles are designed with passengers’ well-being in mind, and the brand celebrates experiences that make life rich. Good food has a way of bringing people together to create deeper, more emotional connections. At the heart of these experiences, there exists a camaraderie and sense of community aspiring for a greater good.
A restaurant campaign that benefits a farm-to-table internship program for high schoolers is a perfect match for Buick. With all proceeds from Eat Out for Good benefiting Urban Roots ATX, participating restaurants and patrons can give back to local students and support sustainable farming practices. This also aligns with Buick’s goal to invest in education. Buick Achievers and Buick Drive for Your Students are two programs that exemplify Buick’s commitment to academic achievement – both at the high school and college level.
What is Urban Roots?
Imagine a place where young people come together to work hard to nurture the earth on a 3.5 acre urban farm, growing 25,000 pounds of produce to nourish the community every year. This diverse group of youth, between the ages 14-17, harvests over 40 different fruits and vegetables, cultivating healthy relationships with land and food as they taste freshly dug carrots for the very first time. They gain an intimate understanding of hunger relief by donating 40% of their harvest to local food pantries and soup kitchens, preparing and serving meals to those in need from produce that they planted, tended, and harvested. That place is Urban Roots.
Since Urban Roots began in 2008, 191 youth have graduated from the program and we’ve paid these youth over $325,000 in stipends. Our youth have led over 5,417 hands-on volunteers in service and 3,600 middle and elementary students through educational tours on the Urban Roots farm. We’ve harvested over 232,496 pounds of produce, and we’ve donated over 92,364 pounds – or 180,000 servings – to 12 different local hunger relief partners.
Together, with the help of partners like Eat Out for Good, Buick, and generous donors like you — we are cultivating young leaders and nourishing the community. By providing deeply transformational experiences for these young people, they become ambassadors and change agents in their own communities. You can be a hero today for a young person who will go on to nourish hundreds of people in the community.
